Instructions:

Rinse and Cook Dal:

  • Wash the lentils thoroughly and soak them for about 20-30 minutes.
  • Boil the lentils with turmeric powder, salt, and water until soft (about 20-30 minutes) or pressure cook for 5-6 minutes.

Prepare Tempering (Tadka):

  • Heat ghee or oil in a pan.
  • Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  • Add onions, ginger, garlic, and green chilies. Sauté until onions turn golden brown.
  • Add tomatoes and cook until they soften.
  • Add red chili powder if using.

Combine and Simmer:

  • Pour the tempering over the cooked lentils and mix well.
  • Simmer for 5-10 minutes to let the flavors blend.

Garnish and Serve:

  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with rice, roti, or naan.
